Ten-digit dialing starts soon for the 317 area code
INDIANAPOLIS — In less than two weeks, anyone with a 317 telephone area code will have to use 10 numbers when dialing.
Beginning Oct. 15, calls placed with seven numbers will not be completed. A recording will ask the caller to try again with the 317 area code.
This is map of central Indiana shows where the new area code will “overlay” on Oct. 15.
This change is needed so a new area code can be added to the region, according to regulators. The new 463 area code will overlay the entire 317 region, which includes Indianapolis and most of its suburbs. Newly assigned telephone numbers can be given the new 463 area code beginning in mid-November.
Industry projections show that without a new area code, the 317 phone numbers would run out by the end of the year. The 317 numbers are in short supply due to population growth, economic progress and the demand for new services.
Regulators said calls that are local now will stay local. The changes in dialing patterns will not turn local calls into long distance calls. Callers can still reach 911 with just those three numbers.
