INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is forecasting high ozone levels for the weekend and into Monday, and in turn, has issued Knozone Action Days for parts of Indiana.

Ground level ozone is formed when sunlight and hot weather combine to bake vehicle and factory emissions and gasoline vapors.

While ozone in the atmosphere blocks ultraviolet sunlight, ozone on the ground level is a lung irritant that may causing breathing difficulties as well as coughing. Anyone who is sensitive to air quality may be affected by high ozone levels. Children, the elderly, and anyone who has heart or lung problems are advised to limit or avoid high-exertion outdoors.

To help reduce ground level ozone, people are asked to make simple changes in their daily habits. If you need to go somewhere, the Indiana Department of Environment Management suggests walking, biking, carpooling or using public transportation.

If you need to drive, avoid using the drive-thru, combine errands to one trip and turn off the engine when idling for more than 30 seconds.

When at home, they suggest avoiding using gasoline powered lawn equipment until after 7 p.m. and conserving household energy by turning off lights and setting the air conditioner temperature to 75 degrees or warmer.
